Rostov NPP includes two operating VVER-1000 power units

The water-cooling power reactors of VVER-1000 type of 1,000 MW electric capacity are used as the main equipment of Rostov NPP power units Nos. 1 and 2:

heat capacity – 3,000 МW,
vessel pressure – 16 MPa,
water consumption – 84,000 cubic meters per hour,
water temperature: input – 289 C degrees, output – 322 C degrees,
steam generator PGV-1000,
steam production – 1,470 tones per hour,
saturated steam temperature - 287 C degrees,
saturated steam pressure – 6.4 MPa,
heat capacity – 750 MW.

The power unit heat scheme is double contoured. The first contour is radiation, the second is non-radiation one.

Rostov NPP power unit management provides centralized and remote control of basic technological processes, automated regulation performed according to the principles of autonomous regulators, local monitoring and control of the auxiliary systems. The first and the second reactor contours’ parameters control is performed from the block control panel.

The reactor compartment hermetic cover of the power units allows withstanding of extreme environmental exposures, such as earthquakes up to 7 intensity, waterspouts, hurricanes, air-blasts, and plant crash. The turbine - К-1000-60/1500-2 – is steam, condense, single-shaft, four-cylinder, with the nominal capacity of 1,030 MW. The generator is of TVV-1000-4 type with the capacity of 24 kW.

Rostov NPP technical water supply is reverse. For condensers cooling they use a cooling pond of 18 square kilometers, separated from Tsymlyansk reservoir by a rock dam of 9.8 km long. A spray tank is included into the system to provide heat removal at the reactor cooling and heat release removal from the equipment. From the cooling pond, on the feeding channel, water comes to the block pumping station, from where it is delivered to the turbine condensers for the waste steam cooling, and than it is flushed to the open discharge channel for cooling.

The most important means of the power unit safety and reliability improvement is annual preventive scheduled maintenance.
