The Smolensk NPP: Rostekhnadzor has confirmed the readiness of power unit №2 for lifetime extension

The Smolensk NPP submitted documents to obtain a license to extend the lifetime of the second power unit for 15 years to the Rostekhnadzor. Compliance of the real situation with these documents was confirmed by the Commission of the North European ITD Rostekhnadzor.

The second power unit of the Smolensk NPP will reach the end of the project lifetime on May 31. During the large-scale reconstruction worn-out equipment, fuel channels will be changed at the power unit, special systems will be upgraded, reinforcement of constructing structures of "hot" areas will be performed. It is ready to bear the load over the project period.

As Nikolay Zuykin, the Head of Nuclear and Radiation Safety Inspections Department at the Smolensk NPP, noted in the completion of verification the Commission found no violations of the mandatory requirements established by federal regulations in the field of nuclear energy, as well as didn’t find any inconsistencies in the readiness of the Smolensk NPP power unit №2 for operation over project lifetime.

All information provided corresponds to the real state of the power unit. Inspection results will form the basis for Rostekhnadzor’s decision about license.

The Smolensk nuclear power plant is a branch of the JSC "Concern Rosenergoatom". The SNPP annually issues on the average about 20 billion kilowatts hours of the electric power into country power supply system, that constitutes about 13% of the energy, developed in «Rosenergoatom Concern», and more than 80% of the Smolensk region energy, developed by the power entities.
