The Smolensk NPP ecologists confirmed, that the nuclear power plant has no negative impact on the environment

The Smolensk NPP has no negative impact on the environment. This was announced at the end of full-scale ecological expedition to the company by the chairman of the public movement «Oka" and member of the Supreme Environmental Council Alan Hasiev.

Expedition to the Smolensk NPP took place in the framework of a long-term program «Social control in the nuclear industry» from 25 to 27 November 2014.

In addition, environmental experts met with the leadership of Smolensk NPP, the authorities of the city and signed an agreement on joint cooperation with an organization of young nuclear scientists. The parties have agreed to combine forces in order to implement common initiatives in the field of ecology, development of cultural, scientific, spiritual sphere.

The environmentalists performed dosimetric and meteorological research at the perimeter of the plant and its sanitary protection zone with professional certified equipment at the site of the future construction of the Smolensk NPP-2 in Desnogorsk and the surrounding areas during the test.

The chairman of the public movement «Oka" and the member of the Supreme Environmental Council Alan Hasiev answered reporters' questions at the end of the expedition. «Our specialists are graduates of Moscow State University. University is interested in implementing of our industry priorities and development - said Alan Vladimirovick at the press conference. - Here, we have conducted more than 2500 measurements in different points and we are pleased with the results. All measurements are in the range of 0.05 - 0.19 microsieverts per hour, which corresponds to the natural background, which is typical for Central Russia. We see enormous potential offered by the development of nuclear power in the region In Desnogorsk».

The specialists of the environmental movement "Oka" will process and analyze all the results within two months. A presentation about the environmental safety of the Smolensk NPP will be prepared according to the test results and it will be presented publicly at the end of January 2015 at the Information Center for Atomic Energy of Smolensk.

The Smolensk nuclear power plant is a branch of the JSC "Concern Rosenergoatom". The SNPP annually issues on the average about 20 billion kilowatts hours of the electric power into country power supply system, that constitutes about 13% of the energy, developed in «Rosenergoatom Concern», and more than 80% of the Smolensk region energy, developed by the power entities.
