Smolensk nuclear scientists launched an international Action "Clean beach" on August 18, 2015 in Desnogorsk. It was organized by the Smolensk public organization "Russian Union of Youth" with support of the State Corporation "Rosatom" and the Administration of Smolensk region.
 
The Action was attended by volunteers from Russia, Argentina, Greece, Italy, Japan, India, members of the Young nuclear scientists Organization of the Smolensk NPP - in total about 40 people.

The event is aimed at attracting people to environmental issues, development of social activity of citizens and respect for nature, increase of responsibility for their place of residence and recreation. International Ecological Action "Clean Beach" with the support of SC "Rosatom" has been held in Smolensk region annually for four years.

At the beginning of the action participants were welcomed by the Head of city administration Vyacheslav Sedunkov, he told the guests about Desnogorsk, traditions which exist here, stressed importance of such events to promote development of ecological culture, a change in man's relationship to the environment.

The selected area for the event is part of the coast of Desnogorsk reservoir, a place of leisure for citizens and guests with a lack of environmental culture. This is evidenced by trash they leave behind that volunteers gathered and loaded on the truck.

"This year, together with the Public Council of the Rosatom, it was decided to organize a rally in Desnogorsk, - said the Chairman of the Smolensk regional public organization Russian Youth League Yevgeny Zakharenkov. - In addition to the ecological action "Clean Beach" it will be held an environmental forum, where we will discuss topics of environmental safety, relevant to the world today".

The campaign ended with a guests’ visit to the laboratory at a training unit of the Smolensk NPP. They met the Deputy Chief Engineer for Radiation Safety Igor Krasnov, the Head of the Department of Environmental Protection Svetlana Aksenov, they were presented an environmental report of the Smolensk NPP. Experts explained how the nuclear power plant participates in conservation of radiation and environmental safety, answered participants’ questions.

As said one of the participants - a 6th year student of medical academy in India Schroth Prabhanshu, there are representatives from Japan among volunteers. "When I told them that we were going to Desnogorsk on the nuclear power plant, they said that the proximity of nuclear power plants are not scary for them and they are very eager to take part in the trip. With this action we want to show that it is necessary to clean beaches, to maintain environmental cleanliness and order - said Schroth. - We want all the rivers’ beaches on earth to be clean ".

The Smolensk nuclear power plant is a branch of the JSC "Concern Rosenergoatom". The SNPP annually issues on the average about 20 billion kilowatts hours of the electric power into country power supply system, that constitutes about 13% of the energy, developed in «Rosenergoatom Concern», and more than 80% of the Smolensk region energy, developed by the power entities.
