Turkish Governmental Delegation Visits Novovoronezh NPP

On May 29, 2012 the governmental delegation of environmental agencies of the Republic of Turkey arrived at Novovoronezh NPP.

It included representatives of the Ministry of Environment and Urban Development, Ministry of Energy and Natural Resources, and Ministry of Forestry and Water Management.

Nv NPP was chosen for the visit not by chance: here is a unique possibility to see all the stages of the nuclear power industry development with VVER model reactors, which will be implemented at Akkuyu NPP: from the building of new units to their decommissioning; from handling RAW and other industrial wastes to more than 50 years old dialogue experience with the public.

On the first day of the visit, the guests met with the management of Novovoronezh NPP, where Director Vladimir Povarov told them about the history of the nuclear power plant’s development, its basic technical and economic characteristics and the modern status of the power units.

Then the Turkish delegation accompanied by the experts of Nv NPP inspected the cooling towers of Units 3 and 4, cooling pond of Unit 5, visited the training point, where they made a point of full-scale simulator, viewed the turbine hall and upgraded Unit 5 control room. Novovoronezh II construction site, which was visited by the guests, caused their great interest, and the specialists of the site told on the progress of its construction.

“It will be the first nuclear power plant constructed in our country. Here we are going to get answers to the questions related to safety and environment protection,” shared his impressions Advisor to Deputy Minister of Energy and Natural Resources, Ilkert Sert. “The first impression is the highest level of physical security of your plant. We saw that also from the environmental impact point of view, it has minimum risks, and that the management of the plant is open to a dialogue with the public. It’s very important.”

“As a representative of the Ministry of Environment, and as a person, which directly deals with the analysis of possible consequences of the nuclear power plant’s operation,” noted the chief negotiant of the delegation Osman ?zt?rk – Deputy General Director for Environmental Impact Assessment Supervision. “I may say that all the seen here gives strong belief that it is a safe plant indeed. Our today’s visit will be very useful to make a positive decision on environmental impact report, which is necessary to begin the bureaucratic procedures for the construction. The information we have received today gives an additional impetus to work actively.”

On May 30 there will be held a “round table” meeting with experts in environment protection and representatives of public organizations, where the specialists of Nv NPP will make reports on radiation impact of the plant on environment, ecology and radiation safety of the population of Novovoronezh, and speak on nature protection activities of the plant.

Novovoronezh NPP is a branch of Rosenergoatom Concern OJSC. The plant is situated on the bank of the Don river at 42 km south of Voronezh. It is the first NPP in Russia, which operates reactors of VVER-type (Vessel type Pressurized Water Reactor with light water under pressure). Each of the five plant reactors are prime – a prototype of serial power reactors: No.1 power unit operates on VVER-210-type reactor, No.2 power unit – VVER-365, No.3,4 power units – VVER-440, No.5 power unit – VVER-1000.
The radiation background in the area of the plant and the adjacent territory corresponds to the level of power units’ normal operation and does not exceed the natural environmental values.
