The key directions of the environment protection policy of Novovoronezh NPP are as follows:

  • ensuring the radiation safety of the personnel of Novovoronezh NPP and the population of the nearby area;
  • ensuring the minimum negative effect of Novovoronezh NPP on the environment.

The design of Novovoronezh NPP and the organization of its work guarantee the safety of the people working at the plant. For over 30 years the plant has been operating safely with no single accident registered so far.

The plant has safety systems preventing emission of radioactive matters into the environment.

Gas aerosol radioactive waste goes through special filters and is released into the air via three ventilation ducts under close control.

The average daily radiation background at Novovoronezh NPP and in the nearby area shows that the radiation safety systems of the plant are efficient. The average radiation background in the area is ten and even hundred times lower than allowed and has no negative effects on the environment.

Wastewater is also thoroughly filtered. After filtration it is sent to special filtration fields. No single drop of wastewater is released into Don River.

The plant’s radiation safety and environment protection department is constantly monitoring the radiation situation in the 50-km zone.
