Novovoronezh NPP: an environmental volunteer clean-up in the city of nuclear scientists

On April 16, 2011 a city-wide volunteer clean-up was organized in Novovoronezh. In the address published in the local mass media Head of the city Yury Pegusov, Head of administration Sergey Mosgovoy and Chairman of Novovoronezh Council of Business Leaders Vladimir Povarov say: “We are sure that we can do much if every citizen, worker of an enterprise or institution actively takes part in the work at maintaining order in our town”. 

A week before employees of Novovoronezh NPP had taken part in the traditional environmental volunteer clean-up organized within the framework of all-Russian campaign of nuclear scientists called “Nuclear Cities Greenbelt”. The power engineers cleaned up the territory adjacent to the enterprise: a 6-km forest area between the auto- and the railroad from the city to the NPP, a 2-km coastland in the area of power unit No. 5 cooling pond and other sites. 

Almost all inhabitants of the city took part in the volunteer clean-up: from schoolchildren to officers of administration and the State Road Safety Inspectorate employees.

676 employees of all NPP divisions took part in the volunteer clean-up. The power engineers worked in the city areas assigned to the plant, in the enterprise sanatorium-preventorium.  The nuclear power plant provided 7 dump trucks, 3 auto-loaders, a tractor with a cart for garbage collection and its removal to a landfill, as well as 3 buses for transportation of clean-up participants to remote work areas.

In all in the course the city-wide volunteer clean-up 28 KamAZes were filled with garbage which was   further disposed. 260 birches, 82 mountain ashes, 64 maples were added to the “greenbelt”. In the course of the environmental volunteer clean-up about 1,200 roots of different bushes were planted.

As Deputy Director for personnel management Anatoly Levadny noted: “In the future the nuclear scientists will also take part in such events. The town can’t do without volunteer clean-ups for the time being. Joint work allows rallying employees, to believe that Novovoronezh will win back the name of one of the cleanest and most comfortable towns of the region”.
