On July 5, 2012 Novovoronezh NPP was visited by the representatives of the American Consulting Company IHS CERA. The purpose of the visit was learning the basic principles of operation and construction of NPPs on the Russian design. Members of the staff of the Directorate for Nuclear Park Complex of Rosatom State Corporation accompanied the guests in the working trip.



Novovoronezh NPP is the first nuclear power plant, which was visited by the members of IHS CERA in our country. During the inception visit the foreigners saw over all the power units of the on-stream NV NPP, including decommissioned Units 1 and 2, as well as Novovoronezh II construction site.

At the operating plant, the foreign guests, first of all, were interested in the issues of the operational safety of one of the oldest nuclear power plants in the world, training of the response personnel and decommissioning of the 1st and 2nd power units.

Further on at the site of NV NPP II under construction they viewed the cooling tower, turbine island, reactor buildings of Units 1 and 2, got acquainted with the progress of the work on the dome portion mounting and Unit 1 reactor vessel installation. Managers and experts of the business subdivisions of the plant gave irrefragable answers to the questions asked by the foreign guests.

 “I am very impressed by the staff’s approach to its work. The plant’s employees perform their work with big affection. My principal conclusion from this visit is as follows: the view about the Russian nuclear industry that today exists in the West has no real evidence,” said Mr.Walker, a Director of Research for Energy in Russia and the Caspian region countries. “Our work is related to strategic decisions in power industry worldwide. And we hope that we will assist to Rosatom in implementation of its global plans.”

Novovoronezh NPP is a branch of Rosenergoatom Concern OJSC. The plant is situated on the bank of the Don river at 42 km south of Voronezh. It is the first NPP in Russia, which operates reactors of VVER-type (Vessel type Pressurized Water Reactor with light water under pressure).

Each of the five plant reactors are prime – a prototype of serial power reactors: No.1 power unit operates on VVER-210-type reactor, No.2 power unit – VVER-365, No.3,4 power units – VVER-440, No.5 power unit – VVER-1000.

Currently, the plant operates three power units (Units 1 and 2 were stopped in 1984 and 1990, respectively).
