The meeting of Russian nuclear plants’ Chief Engineers is being held at Kursk NPP

The measures for creating a system to prevent violations in nuclear plants operation and for provision of its efficient work are being considered at the meeting of Russian nuclear plants’ Chief Engineers, which started at Kursk NPP on May 12, 2011.

It is held to guarantee efficiency of the system of distribution and use of nuclear power plants operation experience, improvement of quality of the investigation and analyses of faults in Rosenergoatom Concern OJSC NPPs work, the analyses of the accident at Fukushima NPP, consideration of the questions of nuclear plants safe operation.

The heads and specialists of Rosenergoatom Concern OJSC, Atomenergoremont OJSC, Atomenergoproekt OJSC, Gidropress OCB, VNIIAES OJSC, NIKIET, Kurchatov Institute Scientific and Research Center are taking part in the meeting.

Director of Kursk NPP Nikolay Sorokin greeted the audience and noted that the enterprise had something to share with and something to report concerning all the questions of the agenda.

“In connection with the well-known events in Japan, today’s meeting theme is of special importance”, Deputy General Director – Director on Rosenergoatom Concern OJSC NPPs Production and Operation Aleksander Shutikov said, opening the meeting. “The lessons of the accident oblige us to improve the work on violations prevention to a qualifiedly new level. For the sake of its success it is necessary to receive and generalize the proposals from NPPs in addition to the developments made in the Central Office”.

Aleksander Shutikov analyzed the results of the NPPs work for the period of autumn and winter in 2010-2011, the current condition of the nuclear plants operation, and formulated the main challenges for 2011.

First Deputy Rosenergoatom Concern OJSC General Director Vladimir Asmolov and First Deputy Director on the Concern NPPs Production and Operation Oleg Chernikov appeared at the meeting with the report “Fukushima NPP Accident. The Lessons Learnt”.

“During the Corporate Peer Review WANO experts noted a high emergency preparedness of Concern NPPs as the strong side of Rosenergoatom Concern activity”, Vladimir Asmolov underlined. “After the accident at Fukushima-1 we organized additional analyses of the operating NPPs and the NPPs under construction for their “steadiness” in case of different situations, worked out various measures for nuclear plants safety. The appropriate work has been carried out at each of the NPPs”.

The report of Deputy Director on Rosenergoatom Concern NPPs Production and Operation Vladimir Verpeta was devoted to the analyses of the causes for operation faults, the ways of their prevention, increase of the faults’ investigation quality, choosing the corrective measures and their realization and the increase of the system of operation experience distribution efficiency.

The nuclear plants Chief Engineers appeared at the meeting with the reports on similar topics.

The meeting results will be summarized on May 13.

At present Kursk NPP operates power units Nos. 1, 3 and 4. The actual capacity corresponds to the dispatch schedule. Power unit No. 2 has been in scheduled major repair since April 22 of the current year.

The radiation background at Kursk NPP industrial site and its location corresponds to the set standards and does not exceed the natural background values.
