Kursk NPP: waterworks structures have been recognized to be steady

Rostekhnadzor Committee examined technical condition of I, II, III-stage waterworks structures of Kursk NPP, including the cooling pond, as well as condition of measuring and test equipment.

The main results of the scheduled inspection of the Upper Don Department of the Federal Service for Technological, Ecological and Nuclear Supervision (Rostekhnadzor) showed that the waterworks structures of Kursk nuclear plant were steady, the devices of emergency protection and the automation were serviceable and the events for the provision of the constructions reliability and safety were fully implemented.

The experts noted that the operation mode of Kursk NPP cooling pond in case of extreme hydrometeorological conditions or hazard corresponded to long-term and short-term hydrological and meteorological forecasts. The measures in case of exceptionally high floods and synoptic conditions which may cause lowering of the water level in the cooling pond are provided at the waterworks structures.

Summarizing the inspection results, State Inspector of State Energy Supervision Department in Kursk region Vadim Trunov reported that “Kursk NPP waterworks structures were in satisfying condition and had normal safety level”.

Alongside with Rostekhnadzor inspection, the condition of Kursk NPP waterworks structures after the floods was inspected by the flood committee with the participation of DBVU (Don Basin Water Department).

DBVU Deputy Head – Head of Kursk region Water Resources Department Sergey Pavlov noted the state of waterworks structures after the spring floods as “satisfactory”.

At present Kursk NPP operates power units Nos. 1, 3 and 4. The actual capacity corresponds to the dispatch schedule. Power unit No. 2 has been under scheduled major repair since April 22 of the current year.

The radiation background at Kursk NPP industrial site and its location corresponds to the set standards and does not exceed the natural background values.

Timely information about the radiation environment near Russian NPPs and other objects of the nuclear industry is available in the site www.russianatom.ru.
