Kursk NPP: the power unit No 4 was shut down by the automation false response

Kursk NPP power unit No 4 was shut down by the automation system on April 25, 2011 at 08:49 a.m. because of the false response formation. The shutdown was made in accordance with the safety operation process regulations requirements; there were comments concerning the shutdown.

Preliminarily this event is classified by the zero level (out of scale) according to the International Nuclear Event Scale INES, i.e. it is not essential for the plant and personnel safety.

No violations of the limits and terms of safe operation of Kursk NPP power units were detected. The radiation background at the NPP and on the near-by territory is unchanged. The radiation background is at the level, which complies with the power units’ normal operation and it does not exceed the natural background values.

Currently, Kursk NPP operates power units Nos. 1 and 3. They operate with capacity established by the dispatch schedule. Power unit No 2 is in scheduled major repair since April, 22.

Kursk NPP is a branch of Rosenergoatom Concern OJSC. The plant is located on the left bank of the Seym River, 40 kilometers to the south-west of Kursk city. The NPP operates 4 power units with RBMK-1000 (graphite-uranium pressure-tube thermal reactors).

The first power unit was connected to the united energy system of the country in 1976. In 1979, 1982 and 1985 other power units were put into the operation.
