Kursk NPP: the meeting of Chief Engineers from Russian nuclear plants was over on May 13

On May 13, 2011 the meeting of Chief Engineers from Russian nuclear plants was over at Kursk NPP. The measures for creating a system to prevent faults in nuclear plants operation and to ensure its effective operation were outlined at the meeting.

The heads and specialists of Rosenergoatom Concern OJSC, Atomenergoremont OJSC, Atomenergoproekt OJSC, Hydropress OKB, VNIIAES OJSC, NIKIET, Kurchatov Institute Scientific and Research Centre took part in the work of the meeting.

On the final day, the meeting participants continued to share experience in the field of nuclear plants safe operation, to discuss the ways and means to improve reliability of power unit operation, NPP readiness for natural phenomena beyond design basis and industrial events. The reports on implementation of recommendations given in WANO Message SOER 2011-2 “Fuel Damage at Fukushima Dayichi NPP Caused by an Earthquake and Tsunami” were also heard.

As Kursk nuclear plant Chief Engineer Alexander Uvakin, a meeting participant, noted that his colleagues from other NPPs and he highly estimated the specific proposals on improvement of their plants safety and reliability, voiced at the meeting, and took them into consideration.

The meeting participants got acquainted with the education material and technical facilities for special training of the security agencies, participating in Kursk NPP physical protection and examined KuNPP waterworks structures.

Protocolar commissions were accepted according to the meeting results.

At present Kursk NPP operates power units Nos. 1, 3 and 4. The actual capacity corresponds to the dispatch schedule. Power unit No. 2 has been under scheduled major repair since April 22 of the current year.

The radiation background at Kursk NPP industrial site and its location corresponds to the set standards and does not exceed the natural background values.
