Kursk NPP: station personnel and firefighters worked out skills for fire-fighting

Planned fire-tactical exercises with involvement of forces and means of fire protection garrisons of Kursk region were held on September 24, 2015 on the territory of the Kursk NPP.

"Exercise aims were achieved, tasks were performed, - said the Deputy Chief Engineer for operation of stage II of the Kursk NPP Nikolay Kompaniets. - All the actions of our units will be analyzed in detail, the experience will be reflected in the regulatory documents. Each training we work out our professional skills of fire-prevention actions".

"Every year firefighters and plant personnel work out joint actions of 42 fire fighting plans - the Chief of the Fire and Rescue Unit №8 Yuri Belkin said. - The operating personnel of nuclear power plants conducts fire training almost every week. During the current planned fire-tactical exercises, we complicated the task. Personnel acted professionally, all actions were meaningful, clear, correct. They used a powerful new technology, in particular, the only car ANR of heavy type in the Kursk region. It has 2 kilometers of fire hoses and pump unit with capacity of 133 liters per second. We also used a car with foam extinguisher ATP-8 with eight tons of foaming agent".

Kursk NPP power units worked normally during trainings. Safe and reliable operation of the plant didn't reduce.


The Kursk NPP has power units №№ 1, 2, 3 in work at the moment. They work at capacity, established by the dispatch schedule. The power unit №4 is in planned preventive overhaul.

The radiation background is at level, that corresponds to the normal operation of power units and does not exceed natural background values, at the Kursk NPP and in the area of its location.

The Kursk NPP, as part of the «Rosenergoatom Concern», is included into the electricity division of the State Corporation "Rosatom". The station is located 40 km south-west of the city Kursk on the left bank of Seym. The NPP has four operating units with RBMK RBMK-1000 reactors with total capacity of 4 million KW of electricity. Power units were connected to the unified energy system of the country in 1976, 1979, 1983 and 1985. All existing power units had technical modernization in 1994-2009. The Kursk NPP is the largest power generating source in the Central Russian Chernozem.
