Kursk NPP: WANO experts have accomplished their work within the framework of Rosenergoatom Concern OJSC Corporate Peer Review

On April 15, 2011 WANO experts have accomplished their work within the framework of Rosenergoatom Concern OJSC Corporate Peer Review at Kursk NPP.

The international experts’ visit was started on April 13 within the framework of Corporate Peer Review held by WANO in Rosenergoatom Concern on the whole, including Russian nuclear plants.

By Kursk NPP experience the international specialists estimated the efficiency of corporate management and the interrelation between Rosenergoatom Concern OJSC and its branches – NPPs on the provision of safe and reliable objects of nuclear industry.

WANO experts visited the production facilities of power units Nos. 1 and 3, and carried out multiple interviews with Kursk NPP senior and middle managers and specialists. Among the subjects studied there were operation, repair, nuclear safety, radiation protection, modernization, emergency response interaction and others.

While summarizing WANO working results, representative of EDF Company General Inspectorate on Safety Jean-Paul Combemorel (France) noted the transparency and completeness of the information rendered by the Russian party, especially concerning nuclear safety. “We have met open and sincere people”, Jean-Paul Combemorel said.

“We were really impressed by the visit of Kursk NPP power units”, WANO expert proceeded. “The volumes of the work on modernization for the last 10 years attract a special attention. You can be proud of what you have managed to do. We appreciated the changes, realized for the sake of safety improvement, most of all”.

Director of Kursk NPP Nikolay Sorokin drew WANO experts’ attention to the number of advantages the nuclear plants of Russia get due to Rosenergoatom Concern purposeful activity. Further he noted: “Corporate Peer Review is organized for the first time, and I am sure that this new form will be beneficial to the nuclear branch”.

The results of WANO mission at Kursk NPP will be used for preparation of the concluding report on Corporate Peer Review, including enumeration of the fields for improvement and application of positive practices in Rosenergoatom Concern OJSC activity.

At present Kursk NPP operates power units Nos. 2, 3 and 4. The actual capacity corresponds to the dispatch schedule. Scheduled midlife repair has been finished at power unit No. 1, the preparation work on its commission is in progress.
 
The radiation background at Kursk NPP industrial site and its location corresponds to the set standards and does not exceed the natural background values.
