Kursk NPP Holds Rally Timed to Day Commemorating Victims of Radiation Accidents and Catastrophes

In the city of the Kursk nuclear scientists, on April 26, 2012 there was held a rally dedicated to the Day Commemorating the Victims of Radiation Accidents and Catastrophes.

The rally was attended by the Acting Director of Kursk NPP Aleksander Uvakin, Head of Kurchatov city Igor Korpunkov, Chairman of Kurchatov City Duma Aleksander Balamutov, employees of the nuclear power plant, heads and staff representatives of organizations and institutions of Kurchatov, participants of rectification of the consequences of the Chernobyl NPP Accident, students of the city schools, and public representatives.

Speaking at the memorial rally, Alexander Uvakin noted:
“Today again and again our appreciative memory refers to those who 26 years ago spread their energies and health to fight the unruled nature at Chernobyl NPP. Among the first who came to the rescue were the employees of the Kursk nuclear power plant: over 700 people participated in the aftermath of the largest industrial disaster. Since that time, there has been done a lot for the safety of nuclear power plants in Russia, and we will not let it happen once again. What can we oppose to this destructive force? Only knowledge and sense! Today we look forward with confidence, but we can’t and have no a right to forget that day, the 26th of April, and must always be mindful about the bitter lesson of Chernobyl.”

In memory of that black in the history of the nuclear power engineering day, the bell clanged 26 times. Peter Yatsik, a participant of rectification of the Chernobyl NPP Accident consequences, Turbine Shop 3 Manager of Kursk NPP, was given a right to clang the bell.

The memory of the disaster liquidators was honored by a minute of silence, which was interrupted by the arms volley. At the end of the rally, the participants laid wreaths and flowers at the memorial “Zhuravli” (The Cranes).
On the same day in the city youth centre “Komsomolets” (The Young Communist), there was held a concert-requiem in memory of the victims of radiation accidents and catastrophes.

At the present time, there are operated the power units No.3 and 4 of Kursk NPP. The units work at a capacity rated by the dispatch schedule. The power unit No.1 is under the scheduled midlife maintenance.  The power unit No.2 is under the scheduled maintenance.

The radiation background in the area of Kursk NPP and the adjacent territory corresponds to the level of power units’ normal operation and does not exceed the natural environmental values.

On line detailed data on the radiation environment near nuclear power plants in Russia and other nuclear facilities are provided on website russianatom.ru
