Director of the Kursk NPP held a press conference for regional mass-media

On March 30, 2011 Director of the Kursk NPP Nikolay Sorokin held a press conference for region mass media. The press conference topic “Safety of the Kursk NPP: yesterday, today and tomorrow” has gathered in the House of Journalists of the city of Kursk the representatives of about three tens of the most popular printing, electronic and the Internet Mass-Media of the Kursk Region and from the Belgorod Region. 


Journalists were mainly interested in the safety of the NPP in the light of recent events in Japan. The management of the Kursk NPP presented an extensive state-of-the-art review of long-term activity concerning unconditional support of safety operation of the Kursk NPP, taking into account the processes, phenomena and factors of natural and technogenic origin.


“Now the leadership of the country and nuclear branch, - Nikolay Sorokin said, - have specified the objective for us - achievement of new level of safety and reliability of the NPP under hypothetical initial events with no radiation influence on the population and environment above the established limits. Now there is a check of the NPP safety systems going on. There was already carried out an additional analysis of the NPP operation, including the modeling of every possible combination of adverse circumstances. The activity in the said directions is going on”.


Nikolay Mihailovich continued: “The plans of building Kursk NPP-2, based on use of VVER-TOI new type of reactor, the most perfect and reliable for today fully comply with the increased requirements to safety as well”. “To provide safety to the people and environment is a priority for us”, he underlined.


First Deputy Director of the Kursk NPP Vyacheslav Fedyukin specified in his report at the press conference the areas of the Kursk NPP modernization in order to increase its operation safety. “Improvements of technical characteristics of equipment and systems of the Kursk NPP and increase of nuclear, radiation and fire safety and anti-fail response have a continuous character, - he underlined, as well as growth of safety culture of the personnel without which the most perfect devices do not work. The Kursk NPP has realized modern requirements to the safety systems and continue to work in this area: their independence from each other, variety of principles of work and redundancy of channels, preservation of operating capacity in case of separate failure and a passive principle of work (without power supply)”.


Director of the Kursk NPP Nikolay Sorokin has answered numerous questions of the journalists which have noted an exhaustive character of the information provided by the Management of the Kursk NPP when the press conferences was over.

At present power units Nos. 1, 2, 3 and 4 of Kursk NPP are in operation. Their capacity corresponds to the dispatch schedule. 


The radiation background at Kursk NPP and in the adjacent territory corresponds to the normal operation of power units and does not exceed the natural environmental values.
