Bilibino NPP: power unit No. 2 has been shut down for a scheduled repair

On April 16, 2011 at 00:43 (local time) power unit No. 2 of Bilibino NPP was shutdown for 60 days for midlife scheduled repair. During this period the scheduled operations on the NPP equipment and systems repair will be carried out.

On April 12 since 17:00 (local time) power unit No. 2 of Bilibino NPP was put out from the midlife repair and put into “cold reserve” due to dispatch restrictions.

At present Bilibino NPP is operating in normal mode. Power units Nos. 3 and 4 are in operation.

The radiation background at the plant and in the adjacent territory corresponds to the normal operation of power units and does not exceed the natural environmental values.

Bilibino NPP is a branch of Rosenergoatom Concern OJSC. The plant is located next to Bilibino city, in the Chukotka Autonomous District. Bilibino NPP operates four EGP-6 uranium-graphite pressurized tube reactors. Each reactor has capacity of 12MW (el.). The first power unit was commissioned in 1973, the second – in 1974, the third – in 1975, and the fourth one – in 1976. The plant produces about 75% of energy generated in Chaun-Bilibino isolated electricity system (upon that the system takes about 40% of energy consumed in the Chukotka Autonomous District).

Detailed and timely information about the radiation environment near Russian NPPs and other objects of the nuclear industry is available in the site www.russianatom.ru.
