Bilibino NPP is located in the Chukotka Autonomous District.

Bilibino NPP is 3.5 km far from Bilibino city. Within the distance of 28 km, there is Keperveem airport. At a 378-km distance from Bilibino NPP, there is Pevek City, the centre of Chaun district of Chukotka Autonomous District. At a distance of 286 km there is Zelyony Mys port (Chersky) – the district centre of Sakha Republic (Yakutia).

The state boarders closest to Bilibino NPP are the boarders between the Russian Federation (Chukotka Autonomous District) and the USA.

The district administrative centre is Bilibino city, connected by ice roads with Pevek and Zelyony Mys ports and of 378 and 286 km long respectively.

Bilibino NPP is a central link in Chaun-Bilibino power center and is connected by VL-110 kW with Chaun TPP (Pevek City) and Chersky electric power substation (Zelyony Mys settlement). Apart from these VLs, there is a network of VL-35 kW that provides power supply to the local consumers.

The source of Bilibino NPP economic drinking and technical water supply is the reservoir on Bolshoi Ponneurgen stream, locating three kilometers to the east from the industrial site. The reservoir provides the water supply of the industrial site, Bilibino city and other NPP objects, and is held by a ground dam.

The most of the population is concentrated in cities and settlements. Tundra and forest-tundra are extremely rare inhabited, mounting districts are deserted. The majority of the city population centers of the districts are connected with the mountain industry.

Natural population growth in the district depends on social and demographic conditions. In summer period, there is large population migration to the country central parts observed.

The nuclear plant works in isolated Chaun-Bilibino power center of a branch of Chukotenergo, an open joint-stock company of power and electrification. Also in the power distribution panel there is Chaun TPP (nominal electric capacity is 34.5 MW) included. VL 110 kW is a backbone transmission line. The lines total long is about 800 km.

Bilibino NPP construction was started in 1966. The first power unit with EGP-6 reactor was put to the power level of capacity on 12.01.1974.

Taking into account the normative requirements to NPPs safety, since the second part of the 80s, Bilibino NPP implements the principle of continuous gradual safety improvement due to modernization.

Engineering and technical modernization strategy is based on analysis of Bilibino NPP power unit compliance with the requirements of modern normative documents on safety, safety probabilistic analyses and operation experience analysis. At the modernization engineering, IAEA recommendations and international experience of conducting works on the operating NPPs safety improvement were considered.

In the period from 2003 to 2006, a large volume of works on the current safety level and modernization estimation and the equipment renewal within the framework of safe NPP operation period prolongation was carried on. According to the accomplished work results, the decisions on each power unit service period prolongation by 15 years over the engineering one were taken, and Rostehknadzor, in accordance with established order, issued the licenses for the power units operation during the additional operation period.
