Valuable data for improvement of fuel provided due to the success of the BN-800 reactor at the stage of physical start-up

"Even at the stage of physical start-up of the BN-800 reactor, held this year, valuable data for the development of nuclear fuel was provided. The improvement has already been running "- said the deputy chief engineer for safety and reliability at the Beloyarsk NPP Valery Shaman. According to him, the newest power unit №4 of the Beloyarsk NPP with fast neutron reactor provides a large amount of complete;y new knowledge and experience, that have no analogues in the world, literally from the day of its birth.

The BN-800 has become a platform to finalize the fast reactor technology before proceeding to the next stage - the construction of serial commercial power reactor BN-1200. «The BN-800 is the successor of the Russian predecessors - power reactors BN-350 and BN-600. However, due to the fact, that it has a large number of structural and technological improvements, then all the previous BN-s, it also has the status of trial. Its priority is not really electricity generation. It is well known, that the economy is always inferior to the prototype serial product (in this case - a commercial VVER). The main objective of the BN-800 - is gaining of working experience and technological solutions to be applied to the BN-1200 ", - said the director of the Beloyarsk NPP Michael Bakanov.

Among the new developments, fundamentally embedded in the BN-800, a number of systems based on the passive principle, not dependent on the participation of automation or human was noted. Thus, the active system of automatic reactor protection is complemented by a passive system, hydraulically suspended by rods absorbers. They "float" in the flow of sodium, and if the pressure of liquid metal coolant is reduced due to power pumps - it will fall in under its own weight and drown out of the core nuclear reaction. Among other developments there ir the cooldown of the reactor using natural draft of air, which is independent from the pumps. That is why there are another three additional pipes, besides the usual vent pipe, over the power unit.

The note about the BN-800 was made during the enlarged session of the Public Chamber of the Sverdlovsk region at the Beloyarsk NPP. It was attended by representatives of the Public Chamber of Russia, deputies of the Legislative Assembly of Sverdlovsk region, experts of regional regulatory bodies - the Rospotrebnadzor, Rosprirodnadzor, Ministry of Energy and Housing, Ministry of Natural Resources, the Ural Regional Emergency Center, representatives of regional NGOs.

The Beloyarsk nuclear power plant began to work in April, 1964. It is the first nuclear power plant in big nuclear industry system of the country, and unique with reactors of different types on one platform. The first power units of the Beloyarsk nuclear power plant with reactors on thermal neutrons of AMB-100 and AMB-200 types were stopped in connection with resource development. There is the only one in the world power unit with the reactor, working on fast neutrons of an industrial power level of BN-600 . There is a power unit with the reactor on fast neutrons BN-800. Power units on fast neutrons are urged to expand significantly fuel base of nuclear power and to minimize radioactive waste at the expense of the organization of the closed nuclear and fuel cycle.
