The Beloyarsk NPP hosted technical support mission by WANO

The Moscow Center of the World Association of Nuclear Operators (WANO) organized a mission of technical support on "introduction of modern methods of control of metal, including without decommissioning work (express control)" by the request of the Beloyarsk NPP.

An important feature of the mission is a private initiative of the host side. The nuclear power plant itself invited international experts to obtain expert advice on the basis of the best international practices.

The challenges facing the engineer are to perform reliably on time and with high quality operational control of metal safely. The WANO experts familiarized specialists of the Beloyarsk NPP with world novelties of equipment for the control of metal and methods of its application.

"We have a large number of modern equipment for nondestructive testing of metal. Modern techniques are necessary to use this opportunity to the fullest extent. During the visit colleagues gave us methodological support based on international experience," - said the head of the Department of metal flaw detection and inspection at the Beloyarsk NPP German Shemyakin.

The Beloyarsk nuclear power plant was entered into work in April, 1964. It was the first nuclear power plant in big nuclear power system of the country and the only one with reactors of different types on one platform. The first power units of the Beloyarsk nuclear power plant with reactors on thermal neutrons AMB-100 and AMB-200 were stopped in connection with resource development. There is the unique power unit in the world with the reactor on fast neutrons of an industrial power level BN-600 in operation. In the stage of construction there is a power unit with the reactor on fast neutrons BN-800. Power units on fast neutrons are urged to expand significantly fuel base of nuclear power and to minimize radioactive waste at the expense of the organization of the closed nuclear and fuel cycle.

Updated information about a radiation situation near the nuclear power plant in Russia and other objects of the nuclear industry is provided on the web-site www.russianatom.ru.
