Beloyarsk NPP: “Nuclear City in Bloom – 2011”

On June 9, 2011 Beloyarsk NPP organized the ecological action called “Nuclear City in Bloom – 2011”, which has already become traditional, in Zarechny city of Sverdlovsk region.

Confirmation of the ecological purity of nuclear power, stimulation of the inhabitants’ cautious care of environment and the city decoration with flower beds were the action purposes.

400 inhabitants of Zarechny city district took a joint part in the flower planting. Among them there were students of schools and Ural Technological College – filial of NRNU MEPI, children from recreational camps, Duma Deputies and the employees of Zarechny administration, Beloyarsk NPP workers and veterans, representatives of the Direction of Beloyarsk NPP-2 being constructed, the Institute of Reactor Materials, the Institute of Plant and Animal Ecology, municipal establishments, housing cooperative, banks, political and public organizations.

The flower planting was traditionally held in a festive atmosphere. The participants received souvenirs with Rosenergoatom Concern and Beloyarsk NPP logotypes.

Beloyarsk NPP has held “Nuclear City in Bloom” action for the third year within the frameworks of the ecological marathon called “Green Belt of Nuclear Cities”, organized by Rosenergoatom Concern OJSC in the cities where atomists live and work.

Beloyarsk NPP was put into operation in 1964. This is the first NPP in the nuclear power industry of the country and the only one with reactors of different types at the same site. The first power units of Beloyarsk NPP with the AMB-100 and AMB-200 fast neutron reactors have been shut down and are prepared for decommissioning. Beloyarsk NPP operates the unique power unit with a fast neutron reactor of industrial power level - BN-600. The BN-800 power unit with a fast neutron reactor is being constructed. The fast neutron power units serve for substantial extension of the fuel base of the nuclear power industry and minimization of radioactive waste due to the closed nuclear fuel cycle.

Timely information about the radiation environment near Russian NPPs and other objects of the nuclear industry is available in the site www.russianatom.ru.
