Beloyarsk NPP: the visit of young atomists of St. Petersburg

On January 24-24, 2011 a delegation from Youth Nuclear Society of St. Petersburg Institute of AEP (OJSC SpbAEP) that is the general designer of the BN-600 and BN-800 operating power unit being constructed, visited Beloyarsk NPP.

The purposes of the visit were to establish the relationship between youth organizations of Beloyarsk NPP and SpbAEP, establishing the collaboration between young specialists of these organizations in the scientific field, discussion of further challenges of fast neutron reactors development, problems of enterprise and youth policy.

The visitors attended the BN-600 operating power unit and the ground of the BN-800 power unit being constructed. In the context of organizational and technical seminar Yury Nosov, Beloyarsk NPP chief engineer, told the young atomists about the successful operation of BN-600, Nikolay Oshkanov, the leader of the Project Office on reactor BN-Commercial development, shared the peculiarities of the future BN-1200reactor. In their responsive reports the guests presented their Institute activity, dwelled on the youth and personnel policy. The plan of further collaboration of Beloyarsk NPP and SpbAEP youth organizations was worked out.

Beloyarsk NPP start-up was performed in April, 1964. This is the first NPP in the nuclear power industry of the country and the only one with reactors of different types at the same site. The first power units of Beloyarsk NPP with the AMB-100 and AMB-200 thermal reactors have outlived their usefulness. Beloyarsk NPP operates the unique power unit with a fast neutron reactor of industrial power level - BN-600. The BN-800 power unit with a fast neutron reactor is being constructed. The fast neutron power units serve for substantial extension of the fuel base of the nuclear power industry and minimization of radioactive waste due to the closed nuclear fuel cycle.

Timely information about the radiation environment near Russian NPPs and other objects of the nuclear industry is available in the site www.russianatom.ru.
