The Balakovo NPP is preparing for peer review

The Balakovo NPP was paid a preliminary visit of the World Association of Nuclear Operators Moscow Center (WANO-MC) experts on the organization of regular peer review in May this year.

It will be the fourth in a row, the previous was held in 1995, 2003 and 2011. The "Peer reviews" is the main program of the WANO, its purpose is to support nuclear power plants, to achieve high performance of operation, finding the best solutions to production problems, improve safety and reliability of nuclear power plants.

The experts stressed the importance of the mission and Director of the Balakovo NPP Viktor Ignatov said during an official meeting with the experts of the "round table": "Each check is in our favor. We consider the purpose of your visit as a support and a hint to further improve our work."

During the week the WANO team conducted surveillance for repair work, training on a full-scale simulator, detours of the station using "white card" (in which experts fix interesting events and comments), interviewing staff. The experts also trained partners from the station how to do the peer review methodology, that had changed in the past year due to the introduction of new documents of the WANO.

In closing remarks, the head of the experts team Radnoti Istvan (Hungary) said: "The Balakovo NPP demonstrated complete openness experts during the preliminary visit. According to the results of the observations,experts noted the high level of operation and nuclear safety of the plant, which has been repeatedly confirmed by the assignment to the Balakovo NPP title of the "Best Russian nuclear power plant".
