Balakovo atomic scientist have discussed the safety issues with the representatives of the Federal Medical and Biologic Agency

On May 31, 2011, there was a meeting of the NPP experts with the representatives of the Federal Medical and Biologic Agency and its regional branches held in the Public Information Centre of the Balakovo NPP. It was devoted to the safety issues of the Balakovo NPP and was held within the framework of the cycle of thematic improvement of radiation medicine doctors.

Head, Yury Terekhov has told the participants of the seminar about conclusions which are made today by the power men all over the world concerning the situation at the Fukushima NPP (Japan). He also dwelt on the advantages, from the point of view of safety, of the Russian reactor facility project WWER-1000 operates at the Balakovo NPP, as compared with the foreign developments. High level of safety and reliability causes demand for this project when foreign countries build their NPPs.

The system and the regulations of the radiation control of the Balakovo NPP became the subject matter of the report of Deputy Chief of Department for Radiation Safety Vadim Kovyazin. “There have been no excess of control and admissible levels of emissions and discharges of radioactive substances in environment from the beginning of operation of the Balakovo NPP”, V.Kovyazin said.

In the course of the seminar work, the physicians received the answers from the NPP experts. Managing Director of branch №2 of the FMBC named after A.I.Burnazyan, Doctor of Medical Sciences, professor, Head of the teaching department for radiation medicine Valery Krasnyuk said, that the main objective of cooperation between the physicians and the NPP experts was the improvement of health indicators of the population of Balakovo city.

Participants of the seminar noticed, that a share of the NPP radiation impact (0,1 %) is rather insignificant in the general annual dose of the human irradiation, whereas the main source of the human body irradiation is just the natural radio-activity (space rays, inhalation of atmospheric radon).  The quarter of an annual dose is provided in the course of medical examinations (X-ray, photofluorography, tomography etc.).
