Balakovo NPP: power unit No. 4 has been connected to the grid

On February 17, 2011 power unit No. 4 of Balakovo NPP was connected to the grid after repair of the equipment. As of 10:30 the power unit was loaded up to 300 MW. The load increase is continued due to the schedule.

Power unit No. 4 was shut down on February 16, at 19:11 by means of an automatic defense due to the project schedule. The unit reactor was taken to the capacity level of 10% of the nominal one. 

This event is preliminary classified as a zero level (below - scale) event by the International Nuclear Events Scale (INES), i.e. has no impact on the plant and the personnel safety 

At present, Balakovo NPP power units Nos. 1 and 3 are operated. No violations of limits and conditions of safe operation have been detected. On January 8, 2011 the second power unit was put on a scheduled capital repair.

The radiation background at the NPP and in the area of its location corresponds to the normal operation of power units and does not exceed the natural environmental values.

Balakovo NPP is a branch of Rosenergoatom Concern OJSC. The plant is located on the left bank of the Saratov Reservoir, 10 kilometers to the north-east of Balakovo city, Saratov region. The NPP has four power units with updated VVER-1000 reactors (B-320 modification). Each reactor has installed electric capacity of 1,000 MW. The first power unit was commissioned in 1985, the second – in 1987, the third – in 1988, and the forth one – in 1993.
