November 26, 2012 - At 04.41, in accordance with the design algorithm, Balakovo NPP Unit 3 load was reduced to 60 % of P nominal in order to repair malfunction of the thermal and mechanical equipment of the secondary coolant circuit.

With regard to the abovementioned, there was neither any equipment damage, nor deterioration of the radiation situation, nor violation of limits and safe operation conditions.

Units 2 and 4 continue running unchanged at the set power level. Unit 1 is in the scheduled preventive thorough overhaul.

The radiation background at the nuclear plant and surrounding area remains unchanged and is at the level corresponding with the normal operation of power units that does not exceed the long-term natural background values.  

According to the International Nuclear Event Scale, this event is not related to safety and is assessed by the level “out of scale”.
