The Balakovo NPP put fundamentally new devices for desalination of make-up water of spray ponds into commercial operation. It will improve quality of water used for technological needs of the nuclear power plant, reliability of heat exchange equipment units, as well as increase life of equipment system of technical water supply. In addition, there will be development of innovative positive impact on the environmental safety of nuclear power plants, which is an absolute priority for the Russian nuclear power plants.

Water purification using a new automated installation is performed by one of the most modern technologies - reverse osmosis. "Compared with other methods of desalination reverse osmosis is the most advanced technology both technically and in terms of environmental protection. In the process of purification of water by reverse osmosis use of chemicals is minimized, the device works completely automatically and, as a consequence, reduces salinity of wastewater", - said the Head of chemical Department of the Balakovo NPP Sergei Galkin.

It is worth noting that the current devices for cleaning chemical water were put into operation at the Balakovo nuclear power plant two years before the commissioning of the first power unit (in 1983). A similar project of launching fundamentally new devices for water demineralization among Russian NPP was first implemented at the Balakovo nuclear power plant.

Works on the commissioning of the new installation are done beyond the program for extending service life of power units.
