Balakovo NPP is ready for the spring flood which according to the forecast of Russian EMERCOM Main Department of Saratov region may start as soon as on March 25. Readiness of the nuclear power plant for the flood is confirmed by the analysis of divisions’ reports on performance of the “Action plan of Balakovo NPP facilities preparation for failure-free operation for the flood period in 2011” introduced at the enterprise by the Director’s order.

The plan was developed by a specially established commission headed by BNPP Chief Engineer Valery Bessonov. The commission included 25 subdivisions owning the buildings and structures as well as subdivisions responsible for supply of materials and equipment for safe operation during the flood.

As ever, the main event of preparation for the flood is snow clearing from the plant territory which is held on a regular basis. Also, the road borders, perimeter walks of the buildings and structures are cleared out. Snow is removed from the roofs, coverings and het chamber holes with defrost water disposal, feed line wells. The railway facilities as well as the roads and outdoor switchgear equipment are also subject to clearing. The system of surface and ground water diverting is checked for failure-free operation in the plant territory as well as drain systems, ditches, catch-water drains, etc. If necessary, the system is repaired.

The regular snow clearing is performed on the “Ring – NPP” road, in-plant roads, equipment warehouses and store facilities areas, as well as approach roads to the fire hydrants. The nuclear power plant area is inspected daily. The respective measures are taken to prevent underflooding with melted and flood waters as well as contamination of the area with oil products. The alternative passage is organized for the flood period in order to escape passing through the points where the ground and flood water may appear.

When developing the project of Balakovo NPP, all possible unfavorable hydro meteorological conditions obtained as a result of study of statistical data for the last 50 years and more were taken into account.
