Kalinin NPP Successfully Passes Civil Defense Checkup

From October 15 to 19, Kalinin nuclear power plant (the Tver region) held routine checkup of civil defense and preparedness of the plant for the nuclear containment and natural and man-made emergency management.

The checkup was held by the committee of Rosenergoatom Concern OJSC with the participation of Rosatom State Corporation representatives. Committee Chairman was Deputy Director of the Emergency Response and Radiological Safety Department – KC and OPAS Operation Department Chief, Alexander Markov.

The basic areas of the checkup were: implementation of legislative and regulatory acts in Civil Defense and Emergency Situations, performing a package of measures for the protection of the personnel and testing of the hardened operations control centres in the plant’s territory.  

As part of the list of practical measures, there was held a preparedness drill on personnel sheltering, checkup of life-support systems of protective shelters and local area emergency alarm system, and off-duty emergency response teams review.

According to the results of the checkup, the committee has confirmed the high level of Kalinin NPP preparedness for the nuclear containment and natural and man-made emergency management. The finding is stated in the final act.

Among the best practices, according to A. Markov, there is good condition of the hardened operations control centres at the plant and in the city, availability of the large base of emergency response teams and mobile operations centre of the Crisis Manager. This operations centre, according to him, is advanced in the Concern Rosenergoatom. “Kalinin NPP is ready to perform tasks on emergency management,” concluded the committee chairman.

Kalinin NPP is a branch of Rosenergoatom Concern OJSC. The Plant is situated on the north of the Tver Region in Udomelsk district. Kalinin NPP includes four power units with pressurized water reactors (VVER-1000) each one having the installed capacity of 1,000 MW.
