Kalinin NPP Runs Trials on Unit 4 Blackout

On April 27 the Unit 4 conducted one of the most important tests at the stage of energy startup – the unit blackout.
The test purpose was to check the operation algorithm of the operating systems and unit protection, and the equipment performance of the unit systems to meet the project in the blackout mode.

During the tests, there have been recorded the parameters and specifications of all the machinery and power unit systems, checked out the operation algorithm of operating systems and unit protection, and the equipment performance of the unit systems to meet the project in the blackout mode.

There also have been checked the reliability and efficiency of the residual heat removal from the reactor core under natural circulation; there have been defined the deviations values of the circuits I and II parameters from the reference values in a transition process.

According to the Chief Engineer of Kalinin NPP Igor Bogomolov, there has been obtained an excellent result, and no any complain recorded.

The unit blackout is the last of 74 tests defined by the stage startup program. Currently, there are held startup operations on bringing out the pile assembly to the minimum controlled reactor power.

After the 72-hours unit operation at 50 % capacity level, there will be started a stage of the pilot operation.
Kalinin NPP is a branch of Rosenergoatom Concern OJSC. The Plant is situated on the north of the Tver Region in Udomelsk district. Kalinin NPP includes four power units with pressurized water reactors (VVER-1000) each one having the installed capacity of 1,000 MW. Implementation of a multistage program of the energy start-up continues its realization on the 4th power unit, which start-up took place on November 2011.
