A public inspection has been implemented at Kalinin NPP

A public inspection with the participation of representatives of government authorities, the Public Council of Rosatom State Corporation, educational and ecological institutions, public organizations and mass media of Moscow, Tver city and Tver region was held at Kalinin nuclear power plant on April 25. It was organized at the initiative of Rosatom State Corporation and became a part of the large program of public inspections, held at Russian nuclear power plants.

Public inspection participants visited operating power units and watched the work of turbine house equipment in the turbine island of KNPP second stage. When visiting the unit control room, the inspectors examined power unit No.3 standard management performed by the operating personnel.

The guests also got a unique opportunity to witness an emergency response exercise, held in the Educational and Training Centre of Kalinin NPP. The shift of KNPP operating personnel trained emergency response actions at the full-scale simulator of power unit No.3. The aim of the actions was to transfer the reactor plant and major equipment to a safe condition during a conventional emergency situation related to energy supply loss and fire in the unit control room.

Specialists of the Educational and Training Centre of Kalinin NPP particularly noted that Kalinin NPP system of personnel training and proficiency maintaining was under the closest attention. Organization of trainings is one of the most important forms of work in this direction. The emergency response exercises are aimed to work out actions of the operating personnel in case of emergency situations or violation of normal operating conditions. Emergency response exercises are held at Kalinin NPP with the use of the latest teaching aids and under supervision of skilled instructors.

The public inspection results were summarized during the round-table discussion with the participation of authorities and specialists of the nuclear power plant. As correspondent of “La Croix”, a French print publication, Benjamin Kenel acknowledged, the visit to the plant had left a good impression: “We have seen the organization of the emergency response exercise – here people try to do their best in order to avoid faulty operation.” In her turn, representative of the Regional Department of the All-Russian Society of Nature Conservation, Head of Tver Hydrometeocenter Tatiana Zimina, who had been cooperating with Kalinin NPP for a long time, said that such visits spoke for the fact that nuclear scientists did not have secrets.

Kalinin NPP is a branch of Rosenergoatom Concern OJSC. The plant is situated in the north of Tver region in Udomlya district. Kalinin nuclear power plant comprises three operating power units with pressurized water reactors (VVER-1000) of 1,000 mW capacity each. Power unit No. 4 is under construction now and is to be commissioned in 2011.
