A transport lock for power unit No. 1 was delivered to the construction site of the Kursk NPP-2

The transport lock is designed for use at nuclear power plants with pressurized water reactors. It is installed in the sealed volume of the reactor compartment. To lock the web, the principle of bayonet engagement is used: two parts are connected by combining the protrusions on one half with the corresponding grooves on the second, followed by rotation.

This equipment is an important part of the reactor compartment of the first power unit. Structurally, the transport lock is similar to the backup and main locks for personnel, it is a cylindrical vessel with two lids - canvases on the side of the hermetic and non-hermetic zones, differing in the design and principle of operation of the lids-cloths, purpose and size. When assembled, the lock weighs 260 tons, its length is 15 m, its height with open canvases is 20 m and its diameter is 8 m.

“The transport lock is an important piece of equipment included in the transport scheme for the circulation of nuclear fuel at nuclear power plants. The main control is performed with the help of automation. Significant technical improvements have been made to the design of the lock intended for power unit No. 1 of the Kursk NPP-2, which made it possible to reduce the duration of locking. With a web travel speed of 70 millimeters per second, we managed to achieve a positioning accuracy of 3 mm when stopped,” commented Andrey Osharin, first deputy director for the construction of new power units of the Kursk NPP.

After the delivery of the equipment, the transportation of the gateway to the installation site almost immediately followed - this is the initial stage of a long and high-precision construction operation. The transport lock was raised to level 26 into the opening between the transport portal and the containment area.

“The installation accuracy is very high - the same as when installing the reactor pressure vessel - millimeters. What has been done so far is only the beginning of a great high-precision work. We are waiting for the release of the lock, the installation of doors and basic equipment, as well as a long period of commissioning to synchronize the lock with all the transport elements involved in the delivery of nuclear fuel. There is a lot of painstaking, important and responsible work ahead,” commented Oleg Shperle, Vice President of JSC Atomstroyexport, Director of the Kursk NPP-2 construction project.

The main function of the transport lock is to provide the containment of radioactive substances in the containment area, fire protection and, if necessary, emergency evacuation of personnel. During normal operation of the nuclear power plant, cargo is transported through the transport lock to the maintenance mark of the reactor plant during equipment repairs, import of fresh and export of spent fuel.

The development of nuclear energy is the key to raising the standard of living of Russian citizens. The Russian industry is increasing the production of the necessary machinery and equipment, strengthening the technological sovereignty of the country. The President considers the implementation of industry support programs a matter of national security and sets the task of achieving sustainable industrial growth in the Russian Federation, acting dynamically and assertively.

Power units No. 1 and No. 2 of KuNPP-2 of generation “3+” are pilot ones, being built according to the PWR-TOI project (standard optimized informatized pressurized water power reactor). This is a new project created by Russian designers (JSC "Atomenergoproekt") on the basis of technical solutions for the NPP project with VVER-1200. They have improved technical and economic indicators. Compared to other 3+ generation power units, the VVER-TOI project assumes a significant reduction in the cost of construction, terms and operating costs. The capacity of each power unit increased by 25%, up to 1255 MW compared to the power units of the operating Kursk NPP.
