At the Balakovo NPP, specialists from Russian and foreign nuclear power plants were trained on the topic of making operational decisions

The Balakovo NPP hosted a training seminar of the Moscow Center of the World Association of Nuclear Power Plant Organizations on the methodology for making effective operational decisions.

The event was attended by more than 20 specialists from seven nuclear power plants of Rosenergoatom (Electric Power Division of the Rosatom State Corporation), including colleagues from the Belarusian NPP and the Akkuyu NPP (Turkey).

For three days, under the guidance of experienced experts, they studied and practiced the concept of operational decision making (ODM). The training material of the seminar was based on many years of international experience in the operation of nuclear power plants.

“Such seminars help to develop leadership skills for small, medium and senior managers,” said Sergey Loktionov, head of the WANO-MC Training Program. - We have been cooperating with the Balakovo NPP for a very long time, they are our reliable partners. Over the years of working together, we have held several working meetings here and three training courses, two of which are on leadership, for middle managers and plant shift supervisors.”

The seminar consisted of two parts: theory and practice. As part of the theoretical part, the experts gave lectures on the types of decisions, the methodology for making operational decisions, and also gave examples of both positive and negative decisions made at different times at nuclear power plants in the world in various situations. Then, the received were worked out in practice during the training sessions.

Based on the results of the workshop, the participants noted that during the operation of power units there are situations that require an optimal solution to provide the safe and efficient operation of nuclear power plants. The ability to make decisions by analyzing the situation, assessing possible risks, relying on past operating experience and appropriate methodology are important components of an effective operational decision.

At the end of the work, the guests and participants of the seminar visited power unit No. 4 of the Balakovo NPP with a guided tour.

For reference:

All nuclear power plants have different needs for expert support that change over time. The main mission of WANO is to increase the safety and reliability of nuclear power plants around the world. The set goals can be achieved through peer reviews, which are aimed at improving the safety of nuclear power plant operation.

WANO membership is through regional centers located in Atlanta, Moscow, Paris and Tokyo.

Today, Russia continues to provide stable energy security. The domestic fuel and energy complex works to increase the competitiveness of the national economy, contributes to the development and improvement of the country's regions, cities, towns, to improve the quality of life of citizens. The share of low-carbon power generation in the Russian energy sector is already about 40%. In the future, taking into account the growth in the share of nuclear generation, it will only grow.
