WANO Experts Conducted Training for the Kalinin NPP Employees Using the Peer Review Methodology

From March 28 to 30, 2023, experts from the Moscow Center of the World Association of Organizations Operating Nuclear Power Plants (WANO-MC) held an on-site training seminar on the methodology for conducting peer reviews at the Kalinin NPP (branch of Rosenergoatom).

The training course was attended by 25 heads of the chief engineer service and the main divisions of the Kalinin NPP. Advisors of WANO-MC Anatoly Zinchenko, Andrey Lachkov, Andrey Podoprigora and Yury Shchelik took part in the seminar as lecturers.

The WANO Moscow Center has repeatedly held training seminars on the peer review methodology at various plants at their request. However, the Kalinin NPP initiated a request for training in a new format, which provides for a comprehensive analysis of available sources of information and focuses on the practical application of the acquired knowledge. This training format was first tested and successfully implemented at the station,” said Anatoly Zinchenko.

The seminar included lectures, practical exercises and subsequent discussions. The nuclear scientists got a detailed understanding of the stages of preparation for peer reviews, got acquainted with the features of conducting observations, interviews and identifying areas for improvement based on their results, learned how to perform white card rounds and assess the state of nuclear safety culture. During the practical sessions, the trainees were able to practice making field observations, describing identified gaps, identifying areas for improvement, and developing causes and contributing factors.

“The training course, recommendations and tips that have been received by representatives of Kalinin NPP will allow them to participate more effectively in peer reviews at the nuclear power plants of the Moscow Center, as well as help in conducting independent internal reviews to improve production activities,” said Anatoly Zinchenko.

In turn, the leaders of the Kalinin NPP noted that this format of the seminar was interesting and effective, and it would be useful to use it for training representatives of the inspection service, managers and specialists of the plant.
