31.03.2023  INFORMATION AND PUBLIC RELATIONS DEPARTMENT OF LENINGRAD NPP

The site for the construction of new units has been completely cleared at the Leningrad NPP

At the construction site of the new PWR-1200 units of the Leningrad NPP, logging operations were completed ahead of schedule. The wood is transported to construction base No. 1 for temporary storage, evaluation and further sale by Rosenergoatom.

At the moment, an area of just over 90 hectares is fully prepared for the next stage of preparatory work.

“Now we can fully focus on the vertical layout of the site. Our task is to make it even and suitable for the construction of blocks. We plan to complete this work as early as May, in order to then proceed with the construction of a temporary fence and preparatory work for the excavation. As for the main period of construction of the second stage of PWR-1200, it will start at the end of 2023, after obtaining a construction license,” said Evgeny Milushkin, deputy director for capital construction - Head of UKS LNPP-2.

He also emphasized that the project for the construction of the second stage of PWR-1200 was developed taking into account environmental legislation and respect for nature. So, for example, in preparation for the construction of two new blocks, the terrain will be changed minimally. The builders will remove the fertile soil layer and transport it for temporary storage outside the site. After the construction is completed, the fertile land will be returned and used for landscaping.

For reference:

Energy is the basis for the progressive social and economic development of the country, the supply of industry and citizens. Russia continues to modernize its energy complex, including nuclear power. This work is performed taking into account modern trends in digitalization and the replacement of imported equipment. The share of low-carbon power generation in the Russian energy sector is already about 40%. In the future, taking into account the growth in the share of nuclear generation, it will only grow.

The Leningrad NPP is the largest nuclear power plant in Russia in terms of installed capacity of 4,400 MW. 4 RBMK-1000 units and 2 PWR-1200 units are operated here. Units 1 and 2 of the RBMK-1000 have been shut down for decommissioning after 45 years of service. They were replaced by two PWR-1200 units in 2018 and 2021. The design service life is 60 years with the possibility of extension for another 20 years. Two more new power units No. 7 and No. 8 VVER-1200 of the Leningrad NPP are planned to be commissioned in 2030 and 2032, respectively. They will become the replacement capacities of power unit No. 3 and No. 4 of RBMK-1000. The annual output of each PWR-1200 power unit will be more than 8.5 billion kWh of electricity.
