WANO international experts completed their work at the Balakovo NPP

Experts from the Moscow Center of the World Association of Organizations Operating Nuclear Power Plants (WANO-MC) completed their work at the Balakovo NPP as part of a pre-visit before the peer review scheduled for this summer.

The team of experts included five people - highly qualified specialists from Russia, China and Iran. During the week, they conducted interviews with the management of the nuclear power plant and made observations in two areas: “Personnel training” and “Maintenance and repair” (M&R).

The experts visited power unit No. 3 of the Balakovo NPP, which is undergoing scheduled preventive maintenance these days.

“We checked the “Maintenance and Repair” direction, observed how the work was being carried out and, most importantly, assessed the understanding of the procedures performed by the personnel,” said Aleksey Lyutov, a representative of Kursk NPP, an expert from WANO. – At the Balakovo NPP, the condition of the equipment is maintained at a high level, the staff understands the goals and objectives that they face. On the whole, the Balakovo NPP was impressed as an enterprise with a high production culture.”

Wang Tingkui, WANO MC CPO (Crew Performance Observations) team leader, performed an observation in the sphere of “Personnel Training”. He visited the full-scale simulator of the control room, where the training of operational personnel took place, assessed the skills of the control room operators in responding to equipment failures in various operating modes of the power unit. In addition, he got acquainted with the operational documentation and the capabilities of a full-scale simulator. It should be noted that already in June at the Balakovo NPP there will be an inspection of the work of the control room personnel according to the "Crew Performance Observations" methodology.

“I am very impressed with the training center of the nuclear power plant, from communicating with the team and training on the simulator,” said Wang Tingkui, an expert from China, the head of the CPO team. – When observing the 1.5 hour lesson, no serious violations were revealed, the team coped with its task. I am very pleased with the results of my observations and the visit as a whole.” At the final meeting, at which the protocol of the preliminary visit was signed, Director of Balakovo NPP Valery Bessonov noted that all the questions raised had been considered and the plant specialists had serious work ahead of them to prepare for the peer review.
