The Kursk NPP-2: standby diesel-driven generators were installed in their final position at power unit No. 1

Two standby diesel-driven generators have been installed in their final positions in the buildings of the standby diesel power plants of the first power unit of the Kursk NPP-2 under construction. This is the first completed state task at the construction site this year.

Backup diesel generators will provide power to the NPP equipment and systems in the absence of external and internal power supply sources. The units are designed for use in the emergency power supply system and provide the operation of the main consumers of safety systems - pumping equipment for boron injection systems, cooldown of the primary circuit and fuel pool, process water for critical consumers, emergency cooldown of steam generators, and individual ventilation systems.

“Throughout the entire period of operation, diesel-driven generators are in the “standby” mode, with constant readiness for automatic start-up and load acceptance when a signal is received. In case of an emergency situation (loss of external and internal power supply sources), the unit starts up with full load acceptance automatically no more than 15 seconds after a signal is received from the safety control systems. It is also possible to remotely start diesel generators from the block and backup reactor control panels in the event of a failure of the automation, as well as during routine testing of equipment,” Andrey Osharin, first deputy director for the construction of new units of the Kursk NPP, noted the characteristics of the operation of the equipment.

“Installation work was performed by specialists of Energospetsmontazh JSC. Now we have to work on the piping of diesel generators, electrical installation and commissioning to prepare this equipment for participation in the stage of hot and cold run-in of the reactor plant,” commented the vice president of JSC Atomstroyexport, director of the project for the construction of the Kursk NPP- 2 Oleg Shperle.

The implementation of this event brings the stage of the physical start-up of the Kursk NPP-2 power unit one step closer. The construction of a replacement station is of strategic importance for the Russian nuclear industry. Energy is the basis for the progressive social and economic development of the country, the supply of industry and citizens. Russia continues to modernize its energy complex, including nuclear power. This work is done taking into account modern trends in digitalization and the replacement of imported equipment. The share of low-carbon power generation in the Russian energy sector is already about 40%. In the future, taking into account the increase in the share of nuclear generation, it will only grow.

The construction of power unit 1 and 2 of the Kursk NPP-2 is performed as part of the federal project "Design and construction of reference power units of nuclear power plants" of the Inte-grated Program "Development of equipment, technologies and scientific research in the sphere of the use of atomic energy in the Russian Federation for the period up to 2024.
