Rosenergoatom: ATOMEXPO-2022 discussed key issues of developing digital cooperation in the nuclear industry

On November 21–22, 2022, Rosenergoatom (part of the Electric Power Division of Rosatom State Corporation) had a round table "Digital Cooperation in the Energy Sector" as part of the business program of the XII International Forum "ATOMEXPO-2022" (Sochi).

The event was attended by representatives of Rosenergoatom, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), the Belarusian NPP, Rusatom - Digital Solutions, as well as foreign guests from South Korea, Egypt, Kazakhstan, Turkey. The round table was moderated by Pavel Gontarev, managing director of VK Digital Technologies (VK Tech).

The participants discussed the key issues of international industrial cooperation related to the use of advanced digital solutions in the energy sector and building an effective dialogue with partners, and also shared the difficulties they face when integrating digital solutions into industrial projects.

Mikhail Chudakov, deputy director general – director of the IAEA Department of Nuclear Energy, welcomed the participants and noted that the IAEA always supports the development and strengthening of global cooperation in the sphere of innovation and new technologies as a guarantee of creating an environmentally friendly and safe nuclear energy of the future.

In turn, Dmitry Aleshchenko, head of the Communications Department of the Belarusian NPP, said in his speech that the main priorities of digital development at the moment are aspects of information security and import substitution, and Russian experience in these areas is the most relevant and interesting in terms of applicability.

Ibrahim Nassar, deputy general director for IT and Digitalization of Petrojet, spoke about complex projects and priority areas of digitalization, including the successful experience of cooperation with companies of the State Corporation Rosatom on the El Dabaа NPP construction project.

Another successful experience of cooperation is the construction of the Akkuyu NPP in the province of Mersin in southern Turkey. Tanzer Gench, IT Director of TİTAN2 IC İÇTAŞ İNŞAAT A.Ş., and Sergey Emelyanov, digitalization director of AKKUYU NÜKLEER, spoke about it at the round table.

In his speech, Tanzer Gench noted that digital technologies have become an integral part of the daily construction processes of the Akkuyu NPP, being a key point for integrating technologies, contractors and partners, as well as the multinational project team.

The Akkuyu NPP is the largest and most unique project. We are building four units at the same time and preparing to launch the first one. We analyze everything that happens in the world, paying special attention to the digital and infrastructure solutions of Rosenergoatom in order to select the best of them and adapt them to our technical and regulatory requirements,” Sergey Yemelyanov said.

Alexander Wiebe, general director of Rusatom - Digital Solutions, touched upon the important topic of corporate culture and change management as the main success factor in the digital transformation of industry. He also shared the successful experience of Rosatom in the sphere of technology partnerships, giving the example of the consortium of developers and users of CAD / CAE systems formed at the initiative of Rosatom, which will be able to create a mathematical modeling platform that can both compete with world analogues and get ahead of them.

Sergey Migalin, deputy general director, director for economics and finance of Rosenergoatom, as well as the curator of digital development of the Electric Power Division of Rosatom, spoke about three key areas of digital transformation of Rosenergoatom: “Digitalization for us is, firstly, support for the safe and efficient operation of equipment . Secondly, fast and high-quality training of operational personnel for new stations is very important for us at the moment. And the third most important direction is the continuous accumulation of operating experience throughout the life cycle of nuclear power plants. And all this is impossible without an ecosystem of trusted partnerships and global cooperation.”

Rosenergoatom is one of the largest enterprises in the electric power industry in Russia and the only company in the country that performs the functions of an operator of nuclear power plants. The main activities of the company are the production of electrical and thermal energy by nuclear power plants, as well as the operation of nuclear installations, radiation sources, storage facilities for nuclear materials and radioactive substances, performed in accordance with the requirements of the legislation of the Russian Federation. Rosenergoatom includes 11 nuclear power plants in Russia, which have the status of its branches, as well as enterprises that support the activities of the generating company. At the moment, Russian nuclear power plants produce about 20% of the total power generation in Russia.
