Rosenergoatom and WANO discussed the issues of ensuring the operational readiness of new units of nuclear power plants in the world at ATOMEXPO-2022

On November 21, 2022, Rosenergoatom (part of the Electric Power Division of Rosatom State Corporation) and the World Association of Organizations Operating Nuclear Power Plants (WANO) held a round table on the topic as part of the XII International Forum ATOMEXPO-2022 in Sochi "Ensuring the Availability of New Units: Challenges and Opportunities".

The main topics discussed by the participants of the round table concerned issues of supporting new operating organizations to provide the safe and reliable operation of NPPs under construction, both in Russia and abroad. The participants also exchanged experience in the sphere of ensuring operational readiness and commissioning of new units and discussed ways to overcome the challenges that newcomers face today.

The main speakers were representatives of the World Association of NPP Operating Organizations (WANO), Rosenergoatom, International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Paks-2 NPP (Hungary), the Rooppur NPP (Bangladesh) and the Akkuyu NPP (Turkey).

It was especially noted that today the full and timely provision of the operational readiness of new power units is a necessary condition for their further stable and safe operation.

Director of the WANO Moscow Center Vasily Aksyonov: “Today, in connection with the development of nuclear energy in new regions, the issue of readiness of new power units for safe operation is very important. At the moment, there are 32 sites in the world in 18 countries where new power units are under construction. The Moscow Center, in particular, works with operators from 9 countries. Our mission is to support new operating organizations to achieve the required level of operational readiness and safe operation. WANO has developed appropriate support programs and additional services.”

Nikita Konstantinov, deputy general director – business development director of Rosenergoatom, Chairman of the WANO Industry Working Group “Assistance to New Units”: “Global energy companies and countries consider nuclear energy as a clean, safe and reliable source of energy today. Lessons learned from the events that have shaped the industry over the past decades should be taken into account in the early stages of a future operating organization. And our task is to accumulate this unique knowledge and pass it on to newcomers.”

In response to the global nuclear industry's need to help newcomers build new units, the WANO Industry Working Group Assistance to New Units (NUA I-WG) was established 5 years ago and is successfully operating. Now it is a cooperation body that unites more than 100 members of the global nuclear community, including NPP operators from more than 50 nuclear energy companies. As part of the round table the Roadmap to Operational Readiness, the first major output of the NUA I-WG, was presented. The roadmap was developed on the basis of the collective experience and knowledge, bringing together participants from WANO member organizations, the IAEA, the Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI) and All-Russian Scientific Research Institute for Nuclear Power Plant Operation, and is a guide for beginners to prepare for the safe and efficient operation of nuclear power plants.

Let us recall that Rosenergoatom, whose absolute priority is commitment to safety principles, is one of the key members of WANO. Rosenergoatom regularly undergoes up to 8 WANO peer reviews per year.

It should be noted that today Rosenergoatom is the only generating company in the country that performs the functions of an operator of nuclear power plants. It has a unique expert base in the field of safe and reliable operation of nuclear power plants and is ready to share his knowledge and experience.

For reference:

Rosenergoatom is one of the largest enterprises in the electric power industry in Russia and the only company in the country that performs the functions of an operator of nuclear power plants. The main activities of the company are the production of electrical and thermal energy by nuclear power plants, as well as the operation of nuclear installations, radiation sources, storage facilities for nuclear materials and radioactive substances, performed in accordance with the requirements of the legislation of the Russian Federation. Rosenergoatom includes 11 nuclear power plants in Russia, which have the status of its branches, as well as enterprises that support the activities of the generating company. At the moment, Russian nuclear power plants produce about 20% of the total power generation in Russia.

WANO - The World Association of Nuclear Power Plant Operators brings together all nuclear power plant operators in the world. The Association promotes the exchange of operating experience so that its members can work together to achieve the highest level of safety and reliability in the operation of their nuclear power plants.

The ATOMEXPO forum is held annually on the initiative of Rosatom and has established itself as the largest international exhibition and business platform where the current state of the nuclear industry is discussed and trends for its further development are formed. Participation in the Forum promotes the business interests of Rosatom State Corporation, as well as its divisions and subsidiaries and affiliates in the global nuclear market.
