At power unit No. 2 of the Kursk NPP-2 under construction, a circular-action crane (polar) with a lifting capacity of 390 tons was installed in its regular place.

This is one of the most important mechanisms of the reactor compartment. This device belongs to the first (highest) safety class of equipment for nuclear power plants. Specialists of Energospetsmontazh JSC completed a set of works on lifting and installing the polar crane bridge at the level of 38.18 m on the railroad tracks using a Liebherr heavy crawler crane with a lifting capacity of 1350 tons.

“During the construction of the NPP, the polar crane is involved in numerous operations for the installation of elements of the construction part and equipment of the pressurized zone of the reactor building: the reactor vessel, steam generators, pressure compensator. And after the start of commercial operation of the power unit, it will carry out transport and technological operations during scheduled preventive repairs of the power unit,” Andrey Osharin, first deputy director for construction of new units of the Kursk NPP, explained.

“Successful installation of heavy structures is the result of complex and well-coordinated work of contractors. The specialists of Trest RosSEM LLC completed the installation of the containment sectors for the installation of the rail track at the level of 38.5 m, the employees of the MSU-5 branch of Energospetsmontazh JSC performed the final operation - the installation of the complete bridge on the rail tracks," said the Vice President of JSC ASE - Director of the project for the construction of the Kursk NPP-2 Oleg Shperle.

“The installation work was performed taking into account the experience of carrying out similar operations at the first unit of the Kursk NPP-2 and power units that were built earlier by the Engineering Division of Rosatom. Due to the optimization of the installation process of the assembly of the polar crane bridge together with the balancers, as well as the application of a number of improvement proposals aimed at reducing the time of the processes, the installation of the polar crane in the design position was completed 6 days ahead of the already compressed schedule,” said the CEO JSC "Energospetsmontazh" Mikhail Pinchuk.

The polar crane is installed under the dome of the inner containment (IEC) of the NPP reactor building. The device of the polar crane allows you to perform transport operations at any point in the central hall of the reactor building: the trolley moves along the bridge (span - 41.5 meters), the crane itself moves along a circular track above the reactor shaft. The total weight of all elements is about 440 tons. Installation of the electrical part, commissioning and testing of the crane are scheduled for the first half of 2023, when all cable routes are connected, the crane will be certified and will be ready for scheduled work.

The polar crane for the building of the reactor of the power unit No. 2 of the Kursk NPP-2 of Russian production was manufactured at the plant of JSC TYAZHMASH, the city of Syzran. 

The construction of power unit 1 and 2 of the Kursk NPP-2 is performed as part of the federal project "Design and construction of reference power units of nuclear power plants" of the Integrated Program "Development of equipment, technologies and scientific research in the sphere of the use of atomic energy in the Russian Federation for the period up to 2024.
