At the construction site of new units No. 7, 8 of the Leningrad NPP, they began the construction of the first facility of the 2nd stage – a pumping station

At the Leningrad NPP, the construction of the first of a hundred and fifty facilities began on the territory of future power unit No. 7 and 8 with PWR-1200 reactors: a combined pumping station for fire water supply and automatic fire extinguishing.

During the operation of the units, the pumping station will be in standby mode. If necessary, its pumps will automatically turn on in a few seconds to eliminate or localize the fire before the arrival of firefighters. The arrival time of firefighters to the territory of the power units is up to 10 minutes, while the water supply of the pumping station is enough for at least three hours.

Before the commissioning of power units No. 7 and 8, the pumping station will be closed in a ring with three pumping stations of power unit No. 5 and 6. Due to this, it will be possible to quickly pump water between the units, and the available reserves will be enough to cope with fires for 12 hours.

Deputy Director for Capital Construction - Head of UKS LNPP-2 Evgeny Milushkin: “At the stage of preliminary work, the contractor completed the engineering preparation of the territory, placed a construction camp, laid temporary roads. Soil excavation work is underway. After their completion, we will begin to concrete the foundation for the pump house. Besides, the workers will be engaged in the laying of fire-fighting pipelines.

“The integrated fire extinguishing pumping station is a priority and paramount facility, as it will provide fire prevention measures during the construction of all facilities of the third and fourth power units of LNPP-2,” shared Konstantin Khudyakov, director of the program for LNPP facilities of  TITAN-2 JSC.

It is planned that construction, installation and commissioning work on the combined pumping station will be completed at the end of 2023, by the time the main stage of construction of power unit 7 and 8 begins.

The first two PWR-1200 units were put into commercial operation in Sosnovy Bor in 2018 and 2021. The design service life is 50 years with the possibility of extension for 20 years. Two more new power unit No. 7 and No. 8 PWR-1200 of the Leningrad NPP are planned to be commissioned in 2030 and 2032, respectively. They will become the replacement capacities of power unit No. 3 and No. 4 of RBMK-1000. The daily output of each PWR-1200 power unit will be about 28 million kilowatt-hours of power.
