Rosenergoatom data center in Innopolis to be built in a year

Kazan has become the digital capital of the country for four days.  From September 21 to 24, a large-scale forum "Kazan Digital Week - 2022" took place.  The main topics of the event were the digital transformation of the economy, improving the quality of life of people and business efficiency with the help of high technologies.  For several years, the forum has become an event of an all-Russian scale and an authoritative platform for communication between business communities, representatives of government bodies, as well as commercial enterprises.

At the forum, Sergey Migalin, deputy general director of Rosenergoatom, and Salavat Rakhmatullin, general director of Atomdata-Innopolis, presented to the President of Tatarstan Rustam Minnikhanov a data processing center (DPC) project to be built in the Innopolis SEZ.

“For us, this will be the largest data center in the Volga region and an element of our own infrastructure.  Next year we plan to complete and launch it,” Sergey Migalin told the head of the republic.  According to him, the data center will be created "as a commercial project with the provision of appropriate cloud services."  Commissioning of the facility is scheduled for December 2023.

Rosenergoatom experts took part in the business program of the forum, speaking in the sections on the digital industry and technological sovereignty of Russia, and organizing their own panel discussion "The geographically distributed network of data centers - as a single infrastructure complex for the tasks of digital business transformation.”

Konstantin Kudashev, deputy general director of Consyst-OS JSC (Rosenergoatom), spoke about the development of a digital tools platform and the creation of a NPP Operation Template - an integrated set of digital solutions for the Russian and foreign markets, taking part in the round table "Digitalization in the energy sector".

In the round table “Technological Sovereignty of Russia in the New Conditions”, Oleg Shalnov, director of the IT Project Management and Integration Department of Rosenergoatom, shared his experience of large-scale digital transformation that is taking place in Rosenergoatom, spoke about solutions and approaches that allow providing the technological independence of Rosenergoatom .

In the panel discussion “Geographically distributed data center network as a single infrastructure complex for the tasks of digital business transformation” organized by Rosenergoatom together with JSC Atomdata-Innopolis representatives of various sectors of the economy took part. They shared their digitalization experience about the difficult choice: build your own data center or place corporate infrastructure in commercial data centers.

So what to choose?  There is no single answer: it all depends on the needs of a certain business.  If it's critical to store personal or business data in your own data center, a modular infrastructure can help make it more cost-effective, efficient, and manageable.  Companies that intend to pay only for the resources they use and are also focused on rapid business growth can be recommended commercial data centers or hybrid solutions when the IT infrastructure is distributed between physical and cloud data centers.

“Building your own data center or renting capacity in a commercial data center – the customer company has to make a decision based on two aspects: its own requirements for data security and the level of risk assessment.  It is necessary to evaluate the requirements that the customer company imposes on the storage and processing of data.  If these requirements are specific enough, then it is often more justified to build your own data center, equipped with systems of the required level of security.  If the needs coincide with what is offered for rent on the market, then it is better to choose a commercial data center,” said Salavat Rakhmatullin, general director of JSC Atomdata-Innopolis, at the end of the panel discussion.

JSC Atomdata-Innopolis, a subsidiary of the Rosenergoatom (Electric Power Division of Rosatom State Corporation), is implementing the Innopolis Data Center construction project, which will become the fourth data center of the geo-distributed data center network of Rosenergoatom.  The territory of the data center will be 4 hectares; the building area will be 14 thousand square meters.

The data center is designed for 2 thousand racks, half of which will be introduced next year, the second half after 2023.  The total capacity of the data center will be 16 MW, the capacity of IT equipment will be 5/10 MW.  The building will have four and then eight machine rooms with independent power supply.  Their total area will be 5 thousand square meters. The allocated power per rack is up to 22 kW.

The Innopolis data center will be built taking into account the experience of the Rosenergoatom in the sphere of energy, physical and information security.
