In the reactor building of power unit No. 2 of the Kursk NPP-2, they started concreting the third tier of the inner containment

The builders started concreting the third tier of the inner containment (IC) of power unit No. 2 of the Kursk NPP-2, this is the last stage of work on arrangement of the cylindrical part of the IC.

“The inner containment consists of a cylindrical part and a dome. Now the final stage of concreting the cylindrical part has begun – the total height of the structure at the moment is 36 meters. After all the laying is concreted, and the mixture hardens, we proceed to installation of armored blocks that make up the domed part of the inner containment,” explained Andrey Osharin, first deputy director for the construction of new units.

Concreting work is performed by specialists of TrestRosSEM LLC. In the first pour they laid 1470 cubic meters of concrete mix. Concreting was carried out nonstop for almost 32 hours. Throughout the concreting process, laboratory quality control of the concrete mixture is made. Samples are collected from each mixer lorry, and only when the required technological characteristics are confirmed, the concrete mixture is allowed for laying in the structure. In total, the concreting of the third tier will require about 3 thousand cubic meters of the mixture.

The inner containment is the main element of the hermetic enclosure of the reactor facility; its height will be 61.7 meters, and the wall thickness will be 1.2 meters. Compared to the serial Russian power units of earlier projects, where the construction of the IC is also provided, the containment in the PWR-TOI project can withstand greater pressure.
