A unique floating nuclear thermal power plant began to supply heat to the second microdistrict of the city of Pevek in Chukotka

The first heat from a floating nuclear thermal power plant (FNPP, a project of the Rosatom State Corporation) has recently arrived in residential buildings of the second Geologist microdistrict in Pevek (Chukotka Autonomous Okrug). Therefore, as of today, the share of FNPP in providing the settlement with heat has amounted to almost ¾ of the entire housing stock of Pevek.

After a staged complex of commissioning of technological equipment, together with newly connected consumers, the floating nuclear thermal power plant will provide heat for the entire city.

“Today, the capacity of the FNPP is enough to provide heat to the entire Pevek with a huge supply. It is expected to completely transfer all consumers of the hot heat and water supply of the city from the heat source of the FNPP by the end of August this year,” said Vitaly Trutnev, deputy general director, director of the branch of Rosenergoatom JSC, Floating Nuclear Thermal Power Plant.

Let us recall that at one time the arrival of the FNPP in Pevek became a catalyst not only for large-scale positive changes, but also for the need to modernize all thermal engineering networks, including the need to transfer to the so-called closed urban water supply system, which, unlike supply through an open scheme, makes it is possible to supply hot water to apartments, regardless of the operation of the heating network.

The first heat from the FNPP in Pevek was supplied on June 30, 2020, upon completion of the 1st stage of the municipal contract for the modernization of engineering networks for heat, water supply and sanitation. Then heat began to flow only to the 5th microdistrict of the city, after which the city utilities began to modernize the remaining heating networks.

Works to replace the entire city heat supply system, starting from design, construction and ending with the commissioning of engineering networks, were performed by Elkon MMC (part of the control loop of ARMZ Uranium Holding Co./Rosatom State Corporation’s Mining Division) as part of a municipal agreement concluded in 2019 with the administration of Pevek.

General Director of Elkon MMC JSC Vyacheslav Galaktionov: “Funding was provided by the federal budget as part of the Chukotka Autonomous Okrug state program “Development of housing and utilities infrastructure and the water management complex” and a number of municipal programs. As a result, central water supply pipelines were replaced in the city, 77 individual heating points were equipped. Today, this allows all 57 apartment buildings in Pevek to be transferred to hot water supply from the FNPP.”

At the moment, the floating nuclear thermal power plant operates in cogeneration mode, that is, it produces both electricity and heat for the city. FNPP electricity generation in 2021 amounted to more than 175 million kWh, which made it possible to prevent greenhouse gas emissions into the atmospheric air in the amount of more than 80 thousand tons of carbon dioxide equivalent.
