Rosenergoatom is ready to transfer the site of the Voronezh Nuclear Steam Plant (VNSP) to the Government of the Voronezh Region free of charge

Rosenergoatom (part of Rosatom State Corporation) has completed the disassembly of the Voronezh Nuclear Steam Plant (VNSP). According to Anatoly Sachkov, director of the branch of Rosatom "Directorate of the VNSP under Construction", the entire amount of necessary disassembly has been completed; the main part of the buildings has been dismantled to the foundation.

“At the moment there are several real estate objects on the site – these are three foundation slabs that can be used for any purpose, as well as a pumping station, two tanks, a compressor station, a chemical water treatment plant (it was decided to keep it, since it is a whole building with large premises), as well as an administration building and three sites. Therefore, we can confidently say that Rosenergoatom has mastered a new competence - the disassembly of the most complex engineering structures, which are the main buildings of nuclear power plants,” Anatoly Sachkov said.

It is worth reminding that the construction of the VNSP was suspended in 1990. The official decision to liquidate VNSP was made by the State Corporation Rosatom in 2015. One of the reasons for the decision to dismantle was the fact that by that time approaches to safety had changed a lot and new nuclear power plants were being built using other, more modern technologies. It was not economically feasible to make changes to the VNSP project. In this regard, in 2016, an action plan for the removal of property was developed and approved, and then a plan for the disassembly of facilities.

The fate of the site with a total area of 8.5 hectares and the objects on it has been determined. The Rosenergoatom plans to transfer it to the region for free use. Now a package of materials for the transfer of movable and immovable property is being considered by the commission of Rosenergoatom and the Government of the Voronezh Region. A decision is expected to be made this summer. The transfer itself will take approximately 2-3 months.
