The Arktika data processing center (DPC) will be built at the Kola NPP

The project of a block-modular data processing center (BMDPC) with a total capacity of about 1.0 MW for processing data from subjects of the Arctic zone is expected to be implemented at the industrial site of the Kola NPP in 2023.

In 2021, the construction of a data center in the Arctic was confirmed by a decree of the Government of the Russian Federation, and the Kola NPP itself was designated as a promising site for the development and placement of a data processing center. This decision is due to the low electricity tariff, the presence of a power reserve and the climatic features of the region – low air temperatures can reduce the cost of operating data centers, since installation of complex cooling systems is not required, which reduces costs by almost 40%.

“We plan to implement this project fairly soon,” said Sergey Migalin, deputy general director, director for Economics and Finance of Rosenergoatom. – The data center has a modular construction and is designed for 24 racks, expandable to 48 racks. The Kola NPP was well prepared: it allocated a site and worked out all the technical details of the connection. A pre-assembled and assembled set of equipment will arrive by rail, where it will be assembled at a regular place.”

During 2022, it is planned to develop design specifications and estimates and start manufacturing equipment, as well as perform the necessary preparatory work on the site and engineering networks of the data center. The launch of the new data center is scheduled for 2023.

“The data center at the Kola NPP will become the basic infrastructure for new high-load digital platforms and services of the Northern Sea Route and the Arctic zone, which are necessary to provide logistics, manage smart city services, support tourism and other important areas for the development of the region,” Sergey Migalin said.

The Arktika DPC is part of the program to create a geo-distributed disaster-proof network of data centers and infrastructure sites of Rosatom. At the moment, three data processing centers are already operating: the Kalinin data center in the Tver region, the Xelent data center in St. Petersburg, and the StoreData data center in Moscow. There are 7 more data center construction sites in various regions of the country that are under development.
