The Rosenergoatom Joint-Stock company is planning to triple the production of non-organic sorbents Thermoxid by 2023

The Rosenergoatom Joint-Stock Company (a part of the Electric power division of the Rosatom State Corporation) and an engineering company OOO Region (Saint-Petersburg) have entered into an agreement to conduct a feasibility study on upscaling the production of such sorbents and a marketing analysis of expanding their usage in the Russian Federation.

Thermoxid sorbents are firm spherical granules that are widely used both in the nuclear power – to recycle liquid radioactive waste and deactivate NPP industrial waters, and other industries – to purity water and alcoholic beverages.

During multiple years of using Thermoxid sorbents both in Russia and abroad (in water solutions’ processing systems at Tianwan NPP and Kudankulam NPP), they have proven to be highly efficient. When used at nuclear power facilities, they drastically reduce the amount of liquid radioactive waste and cut the ingress of radionuclides into the environment.

According to Nikita Konstantinov, deputy CEO and business development director at the Rosenergoatom Joint-Stock Company, it is essential to expand the usage of Thermoxid sorbents in Russia because the demand for these products has been growing rapidly.

‘Our main goal for the time being is to define the best way to develop the future production to satisfy this demand and to uncover additional prospective market segments, which will be followed by a long-term program of developing this direction as a part of Rosatom’s strategic goal to introduce new products for the Russian and the global markets’, N. Konstantinov noted.

At the moment, sorbents are produced by AO PNF Thermoxid (Zarechnyy city, Sverdlovsk region), a part of Rosenergoatom’s management group. The company has great track record of using Thermoxid sorbents for the nuclear power industry both in Russia and internationally.

The Rosenergoatom Joint-Stock Company is a leading unit of the Electric Power Division of the Rosatom State Corporation. The JSC is the largest generation company in Russia in terms of the electric power output and the world’s 2nd one in terms of the atomic generation capacity. It encompasses all 10 nuclear power plants of Russia that have an affiliate status as well as companies facilitating the operation of the generation unit. All in all, the Russian NPPs operate 35 power blocks with the total installed capacity of 30.25 GW.
