14.03.2019  THE INFORMATION AND PR DEPARTMENT OF THE BELOYARSK NPP

The first OSART mission of the International Atomic Energy Agency will take place at the Beloyarsk NPP in 2021

More than a hundred managers and workers of the Beloyarsk NPP took part in the seminar of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) on preparation for the OSART mission*. The seminar called “General concept of OSART” was held by the experts led by the head of the IAEA’s operational safety team Peter Tarren in Zarechny (Sverdlovsk Oblast). At the seminar, the concept of the carrying out OSART’s missions and the strategy of the holding inspections at the site of the nuclear power plant were discussed.

The OSART mission at the Beloyarsk NPP is scheduled 2021. This is one of the forms of IAEA activity aimed at the evaluating nuclear power enterprises in terms of international standards and requirements, at the identifying NPP strengths that may be useful for other nuclear power plants or for operating organizations and regulatory bodies, as well as at the determining areas for possible improvements in order to develop operational safety.

Safety is the highest priority in all activities of the Beloyarsk NPP. The nuclear power plant provides cost-effective production and reliable supply of consumers with electrical and thermal energy with unconditional compliance with all types of safety. The Beloyarsk NPP includes two operating power units (the power unit No. 3 with the BN-600 reactor and the power unit No. 4 with the BN-800 reactor), gross installed capacity of which is about 15% of the installed capacity of all power plants of the Sverdlovsk energy system.

*The OSART mission is the oldest type of IAEA missions, recognized worldwide as a powerful tool for independent assessment of the operational safety of nuclear power plants. It aims to further develop and improve the safety of nuclear power plants through the dissemination of best practices. It is organised by the IAEA – an intergovernmental organization of the UN, which has been developing safety standards in the field of atomic energy and ensuring its application to any type of activity for several decades now.

The IAEA has been carrying out such missions since 1982. Retrospectively, more than 180 OSART missions took place all over the world. In Russia, OSART missions were conducted at the Leningrad NPP, the Balakovo NPP, the Rostov NPP, the Smolensk NPP, the Kola NPP and the Novovoronezh NPP. Also, at Rosenergoatom the corporate mission was held. At the Beloyarsk NPP, the mission of OSART will be held for the first time.
