Technological operations within the cold phase of the cold and hot equipment trials were completed at the power unit No 2 of Novovoronezh NPP-2

On 15 August, 2018, the cold phase of the cold and hot equipment trials (CHT) was completed at the power unit No 2 of Novovoronezh NPP-2 (No 7 of NVAES).

CHT is the most important stage of commissioning, which precedes physical start-up. It is conducted to confirm the power unit reliable and safe operation. The cold and hot trials began on 1 August, 2018 and lasted for 60 days.

At the cold stage of the CHT, 68 heat-hydraulic tests were successfully performed at the power unit No 2 of NVNPP-2: the primary and secondary circuits of the reactor unit were tested for tightness and strength, main circulation pumps (MCP) were tested at cold parameters, steam generators were filled with feed (chemically dematerialized water), the turbo generator barring gear was tested, etc.

The cold phase completion marks the beginning of a minor revision of the main equipment, lasting for 15 days.

“At the stage of minor revision, equipment will be prepared for start-up operations during the hot phase of the CHT, including installation of the executive part of the reactor control and protection system, thermal insulation for equipment and pipelines”, the Deputy Chief Engineer for New Unit Construction of NVNPP Vladimir Kazanskiy noted.

Within the next stage of the commissioning – the hot phase of the CHT – the reactor unit’s main and auxiliary equipment and systems will be tested in design and operating conditions.

After the cold and hot trials the unit hermetical physical barriers will be tested for tightness and strength. Then the main equipment will be examined, and the reactor will be disassembled and fuel assembly imitators will be extracted.

After receiving the launch permission, the fuel assembly will be loaded into the reactor of the 2nd unit of Novovoronezh NPP-2, that is, the physical launch stage will start.

Novovoronezh NPP is a branch of Rosenergoatom JSC (a part of the largest Division of Rosatom State Corporation – Electric Power Division). The Plant is situated on the River Don bank 42 km South of Voronezh. This is the first NPP of Russia with VVER type reactors (Water-Water Power Reactors of containment type with water under pressure). Three reactors of the Plant are the main ones – the prototypes of the serial power reactors. The first power unit was commissioned in 1964, the second one - in 1969, the third one – in 1971, the fourth one – in 1972, and the fifth one – in 1980.

The power units No 1 and No 2 were shut down in 1984 and 1990, respectively. The power unit No 3 was shut down in 2016 for the decommissioning events. The power unit No 4 was shut down for modernization works. The power unit No 1 of Novovoronezh NPP-2 was commissioned on 27 February, 2017. The power unit No 2 is in the stage of commissioning works.
