Rostov NPP: the starting power unit No 4 reactor has been washed with borated water

The stage of equipment review – that includes borated water washing of the reactor and the power unit preparation for physical start-up – continues at the starting power unit No 4 of Rostov NPP.

“The task of washing with borated water is to clean off the reactor equipment from the distillate after the hot trial and fill the first circuit and tank farm with borated water, which would display the reactor’s readiness for the physical start-up, i.e. loading of the nuclear fuel assemblies”, the Head of the Reactor Department of the Phase II Oleg Vysotskiy noted.

The review of the main and auxiliary equipment of the reactor unit’s primary and secondary circuits has begun on 17 October. It corresponds with the plan for the power unit No 4 preparation for physical launch, which is scheduled for 2017.

The Rostov NPP is an affiliate company for Rosenergoatom Concern OJSC. The plant is based at the Tsymlianskoe reservoir shore 13.5 km away from Volgodonsk. The NPP operates VVER-1000 reactors with the installed capacity of 1000 megawatts. The power block No.1 commenced commercial operations in 2001, with the second and the third power blocks to follow in 2010 and on September 17, 2015, respectively. The power block No. 4 is currently under construction.
